It was just a small newspaper advertisement, but when Michelle Martin saw that a business called The Pampered Puppy was for sale, it caught her eye. After grooming dogs in her basement for 10 years, she had been looking for a bigger space to call her own.
Since 2004, the Pampered Puppy has grown from a “little tiny business” with only two groomers, to more than 10 employees. In addition to nine groomers dedicated to preening pups, the Pampered Puppy has a doggie daycare facility and a small boutique near the reception area.
“It was my brainstorm but it turned into bigger than we thought it was going to be,” says Michelle. It’s also become a family affair. Daughters Sharon and Angela, who are both Certified Master Groomers, can often be found in the back grooming area, surrounded by clients-in-waiting. “It’s stressful for them to be in a kennel, so we let them roam around together. It’s so much better for their emotional health,” explains Michelle. They were so busy that Michelle’s husband Brian also left his job as an electronics engineering technologist to manage the shop.
“It just blew up into what it is now,” says Michelle.
