Bursting with potted blooms, the vintage iron-wheeled cart out front acts as a refreshingly retro welcome mat for Port Moody’s Elderberry Floral. Inside, the atmosphere follows suit. Fresh-cut flowers and ready-assembled arrangements are artfully displayed among shabby chic, farmhouse furniture.

Elderberry owner Michele Davis has created a flower shop as inviting as an old porch swing. The designs are contemporary but the customer service is reminiscent of a simpler time: wholesome, honest, and unpretentious. The “home sweet home” distressed plaque (among many gift ideas), is a nod to the sort of place people pop into to chat. Equally, you’ll see customers buying flowers for themselves as much as purchasing floral designs and gifts for others.

“When you walk into Elderberry we feel you’re one of the family,” says Michele. “People talk about their day and what’s happening in their life. We have seen many families’ children grow up from elementary school to graduation. You’re a customer walking in the door — and a friend walking out.”

Schooled in floral design, forestry, and horticulture, Michele honed her green thumb for nine years at a local garden centre. Opened in 2003, Elderberry takes its name from the indigenous BC plant. Elderberries are known for their medicinal, antioxidant activity, and healing properties. “They make you feel great — just like our shop and everything in it,” exclaims Michele. “Good for everyone!”
