Imagine taking over the family business without compromising on the success achieved by your parents. That's what Elaine Pierik has done as owner of Pierik’s Cycle in Hamilton’s Westdale Village.
Elaine understands what her mom and dad knew: how to make customers happy in the bicycle-selling business. “We try to get the person into the bike that they need, not what we think they need,” she explains. “We talk to them and we let people try the bikes out so that they get a feel for what they like and don’t like, so we can help them get the right product. A hundred dollars, plus or minus, generally isn’t going to make a difference to a person, but if they love the bike or just say it’s okay, that’s the big difference.”
Pierik’s launched in nearby Ancaster in 1967 and has been a Westdale mainstay since 1975. “My parents started it and eight years later they moved down here to Hamilton, in Westdale, across the street from where we are now,” says Elaine. "They were there for 20 years.”
Elaine was already working in the store full-time when she bought it from her parents in 1995. When they sold the building, Elaine relocated a few steps away and has been there ever since.
