She Said Boom is a pioneer of Toronto’s used book scene. Originally a partnership between Randy Harnett and his friend John Bowker, both curious collectors, the shop began as a new and used record store. The unique name is a song lyric from 1980s, all female post-punk band Fifth Column. John has since moved to Roncesvalles area and is focusing on vinyl records, while Randy, more of a bibliophile, specializes in literature of the historical, philosophical and political persuasions at the store’s original College Street location.
When She Said Boom first opened back in 1995, most people were cashing in record collections and buying CDs. “People were still into reading,” Randy explains. “Those were the glory days. We just hit the ground running.”
