Vintage Bride owner Cher Thornton speaks nostalgically about the wedding dresses she stocks in her store. “There are a lot of textiles that aren’t even, or are very rarely, produced these days that were produced a lot in the past,” Cher explains. She describes a material called matelassé, which is featured in some of Vintage Bride’s collection of over 300 wedding gowns. “It’s kind of like brocade but it has a bumpy sort of texture to it,” she says. “It’s really a beautiful fabric.”

It’s not just the textiles, but the unique designs and classic silhouettes that attract women to Vintage Bride. Cher says she often encounters brides who have visited the typical modern stores but were unhappy with the selection. “They want to be different, or a little bit more individual — outside of the mainstream box,” Cher says.

Vintage Bride shop operates by appointment only, making the process of finding a dream gown a cozy and intimate experience. The store itself is located on Markham Street in the historic Mirvish Village, just above The Refinery, a vintage clothing store that Cher also owns and operates. The interior features weathered hardwood floors, an antique chaise lounge, a rich wooden fireplace and a touch of stained glass, creating a warm atmosphere that is charmingly suited to the experience of shopping for vintage wedding dresses. Assisted by Cher, clients can browse through hundreds of gorgeous gowns that were made anywhere from the late 1800s to the early 1990s in a variety of lush fabrics and silhouettes.
