Bringing the LA Cupcake Craze Home

Michelle LeMoignan and Brianna Vallet share a love for baking, their hometown, and the bright smiles on their customers' faces when they eat a freshly baked cupcake at Flirt Cupcakes. “I just love the instant gratification of creating something that makes people happy,” Michelle says. “At our shop, people leave with a smile on their face.”

Inspired by the cupcake shops she discovered on trips to Los Angeles, Michelle brought the craze to Edmonton with her friend and hockey teammate, Rick Krupa, in 2009. “We both just loved baking and business and decided to combine the two,” she says. “We actually opened on Valentine’s Day. It was chaos.” A few years later, she joined forces with Brianna, who manages the downtown location of Flirt Cupcakes. They've built a great following and have many repeat customers.

Only the Best at Flirt

Every morning before the sun rises, the bakers at Flirt Cupcakes are at work preparing 14 different flavours, along with a monthly feature flavour. “We make everything from scratch with quality ingredients that are sourced locally wherever possible,” says Michelle. “We don’t cut corners. Our product makes us who we are, so we want to make sure we put out the absolute best cupcakes we can make.”

Both women have their favourites. Michelle's is the vanilla cake with cookie dough centre and Brianna's is the Sweet Georgia Brown, which is a brown sugar and cinnamon cake topped with cream cheese icing. They also offer a line of vegan and gluten-free cupcakes, so customers with special dietary restrictions and food lifestyle choices won’t miss out. “Since we introduced them, our vegan cupcakes have been selling like hotcakes,” Michelle says. “And our gluten-free cupcakes are quite popular, too.”

In addition to baking enough for their two retail locations, Flirt Cupcakes is also a popular fixture at weddings, baby showers, office parties and various events across Edmonton. “It’s nice to be a part of people’s special occasions. We’ve catered our customer’s engagements, their weddings and their baby showers. We get to be a part of the milestones in their lives, which is amazing.”

Giving Back: No Cupcake Goes to Waste

Committed to making a positive impact in the community since the beginning, Flirt Cupcakes has been involved in many fundraisers, events and galas such as Little Warriors, YESS, the Fringe and Ice on Whyte. “We do a lot of fundraising,” Michelle says. “If we have extra cupcakes at the end of the day that would just be thrown out, we’ll take them to a homeless shelter or other places that might need them.”
