A Craft Market for Local Artistic Creations

“I was tired of seeing the old paradigm of starving artists,” Bird On A Wire Creations owner Kate Nagel says. “I want to see thriving artists. Once that idea hit me, I let it gestate. When the time came, I opened the shop.”

Since 2010, Bird On A Wire has supplied Vancouverites and visitors alike with the work of artists from Vancouver and its neighbouring cities. It is a year-round craft market that features work by professional and experienced artists. Both for the community and for the artists, the business works to keep everyone thriving.

Buy Local, Support Local

It can be difficult for artists to rely on a consignment-only business model, so Kate went out of her way to prove that it can be reliable. With consistent business practices and constant communication, she has made Bird On A Wire into a status symbol for the artists who sell their work there.

“They tell me that this place has become a haven for artists,” says Kate. “That when their work is being sold here, they have made it.” At Bird On A Wire, shoppers can find everything from purses to paintings, chocolates to vegan yarn. On top of exclusively supporting local artists and artisans, the store gives 10% of the net profits to various charities in the Lower Mainland.

“When a store would open that had a similar role in the community, I didn’t think of it as competition,” Kate says. “I thought that it’d be great for the local artists who would be supported with the help of that new store. And now, Holt Renfrew is starting to host their own craft market. Some of the artists that I have featured are in that market, and that’s just amazing!”

Crafting Classes & Unique Gifts

What better unique gift for a friend or family member than a few classes at Bird On A Wire? The popular Needle Felting Class teaches you to make cute creations and all supplies are included. Their Friday Night Crafters Club is a great way to become involved in the local arts community as well.

“Artists are like politicians in that, where the politician focuses on the economy and making a better country or province for our children, artists do so for our culture,” Kate says. “Because, just like how my family and my community has supported Bird On A Wire, and just like how the artists support and are supported by this business, we need to support our creative side. We cannot accomplish our dreams alone, and for that, I would like to thank my family, community, the artists and the patrons of Bird On A Wire Creations.”
