An Irish Pub for Everyone

The Pour House has been the quintessential local pub at the northern tip of the Annex for more than a decade. Its Dupont Street location makes it well positioned to act as a meeting point between neighbourhoods. Manager Dave Eisen points out that the bar brings in workers and families from the Annex, affluent residents from the Avenue Road and Casa Loma areas, and students from the nearby George Brown campus .

When asked what he likes best about managing the Pour House, Dave doesn’t miss a beat. “The great people I get to meet and the veteran staff who make my life easy,” he says. The mix of regulars and newcomers and the hum of a well-coorindated staff moving smoothly through the bar are a testament to Dave's accomplished managerial style.

Century-Old Charm

The sprawling alehouse is housed inside a century-old building and both the interior and the exterior are full of character. The eye-catching yellow facade, turreted roof and large sign are noticeable from blocks away. “It was an old doctor’s house I hear,” Dave says when asked about the history behind the labyrinthine building on Dupont.

If you spend any time near the pub's front windows, you'll notice that passersby are often lured inside by the attractive street-front signage advertising daily specials and by the appealing smells coming from inside the kitchen. Without fail, customers will be met with a quick smile and a greeting from the staff or Dave as they make their way to a table.

Pub Excellence 101: Food, Beer and Atmosphere

The Pour House has the total package when it comes to food and drink. The bestselling items on the menu are exactly the sort of dishes that you would expect to find at a great Irish pub. The Irish Fry, a hearty all-day breakfast plate with strip bacon and sausages, is always popular, as is the Cottage Pie, a meat pie made with local Ontario beef. Dave also points out that the Irish stew, thick with Guinness, lamb, beef and root vegetables, is a perennial favourite with customers, especially during the colder winter months.

When describing the bar's delectable food menu, Dave is quick to give credit to chef Jamie Hunkins in the kitchen. While not particularly Irish in nature, the Chef’s Taco Night each Thursday really gives Jamie a chance to shine;  the weekly $3 taco specials feature a unique combination of ingredients of the chef’s own invention.

For those who prefer their calories in liquid form, the Pour House has been quick to adapt to the changing trends in beer tastes. While staples like Guinness will never be absent in an Irish pub, the bar keeps things interesting by adding a selection of rotating taps to showcase new and exciting craft beers.

When it comes to the atmosphere, the Pour House is eclectic, friendly and homey. Every Thursday and Saturday the bar features live music by mostly local artists. It's during the summer though that the neighbourhood pub really gets to shine. The two spacious outdoor patios are its hidden gems, attracting people from the local area and beyond.
