Since 1992, Son of the Pharaoh has been providing Calgary with unique giftware from across the globe, but really its history with Egyptian wares goes much further back for owners Carol and Emad Card. Emad owned stores in Egypt and his family has been in business there for hundreds of years. When he moved to Canada he couldn’t find a position in his field of social work, so he and his wife started importing goods from his home country. That led to them opening Son of the Pharaoh.
Now with two locations, Son of the Pharaoh has expanded beyond its Egyptian roots. “In our stores we have strong Egyptian flavour, but also a little bit of everything from all over the world,” says Carol. “We literally go all over the world to import from several different countries.”
Their slogan is “Purveyor of the Unique”, and for good reason. The owners seek out giftware, home décor and jewellery you will not find anywhere else in Calgary – or possibly in Canada. “We give a lot of history lessons and most people really enjoy it,” says Carol. “I write keywords down so people can go home and look it up and learn more.”
