Hillcrest Bakery

“A lot of people have been coming here for decades, they are passionate about Hillcrest and feel a real connection to it,” says Hillcrest Bakery and Deli owner David Moyer. “We often hear stories like, 'I used to buy these cookies with my Grandma when I was a kid.' And we’ve had people come in to get their second wedding cake and tell us, 'the first time I got married, the cake was so good I just had to come in again.'”

David, who apprenticed at a German bakery in Kamloops, has been a part of the Hillcrest baking team since 1988. When his boss decided to retire in 2011, David happily accepted the opportunity to continue the Hillcrest tradition. “All the recipes are the same ones I’ve been using here for many years. When we took over we didn’t change anything,” he says. Owner and operator of Hillcrest Bakery and Deli is an honour David shares with his wife Sheana, who manages the front-of the house and is the main cake decorator. “Sheana and I are very proud to own the bakery and be part of the community,” says David.

Established in 1972, Hillcrest’s lengthy contribution to the White Rock community was honoured during City Hall’s celebrations before the 2014 municipal elections. “We got to shake the Mayor’s hand and received a big plaque that’s on our wall, and there was a nice speech. Hillcrest is definitely part of the fabric of the community,” says David proudly.

David is quick to smooth over any anxiety about the future of the local bakery and favourite lunch spot. “Everyone in town knows this building has been scheduled for demolition for the last couple of years, but our plan has always been to keep Hillcrest in White Rock,” he says.
