Fantastic! First time ordering from there and it will not be the last. Ordered Ginger Beef - perfectly balanced with lots of fresh veg, and plenty enough to have leftovers. Thank you!

We arrived very late to Saint John, after a long day of driving. The owners were quiet and courteous, and agreed to serve us even at that late hour. Jun suggested dishes that would not be too heavy, and we enjoyed everything. Thank you for a wonderful welcome to Canada!

Poor at Best

For our daughter's Birthday my husband and I decided to take the day from work and have a family day. We all enjoy a Chinese Buffet and were told the Bamboo East has a lunch Buffet so we thought we would go there for lunch. (Someplace new to us) Never, Ever, Again. The food was low quality and quantity. Upon our arrival there were 2 other people in the restaurant (and I’m going to use the word restaurant although I would prefer the word dive-there is a reason they dont show a pic. of the inside on their page)The only food that was in the buffet at that point was 3 pieces of fried chicken, 6 chicken balls, rice, curry noodles, ginger chicken (I think) mixed veggies. There was also wanton soup and a sweet and sour soup. Which none of us eat. I considered leaving but my daughter protested and said “but mommy I’m hungry” so we stayed. Personally I don’t eat fried chicken but was happy with some rice and chicken balls and the waitress said she would be right out with some egg rolls. Moments later she did reappear and announced she had egg rolls and chicken balls but talk about being given portions she brought out 3 eggs rolls (as we were now the only 3 left in the place) 6 chicken legs/wings and 9 chicken balls. So I guess we were only allowed 1 egg roll each, 3 small chicken balls and 2 pieces of fried chicken. During our lunch another couple had arrived and again the same ritual happened, the waitress brought out 2 eggs rolls, 4 pieces of chicken and 6 chicken balls. I know this because each time she brought out something she announced it! There was plenty of “ginger chicken” maybe because it was mushy and not good tasting by a long shot. I did ask if there were any ribs and the waitress told me “no we have fried chicken instead” Never been to a chinese place that didnt serve ribs! A person was really out of luck unless they liked chicken – a lot! We managed to eat enough rice and chicken to fill us for lunch however we did not enjoy it by any means. None of the food was very good. At 1:45 the waitress announced there was still 2 pieces of chicken in the buffet and wanted to know if anyone wanted anymore because the buffet was over in 15 min. We had all been portioned! We all had the same response, No and my husband, myself and the other couple shared a look at one another a look of total disgust. My daughter who is 8 btw was charged $8.95 and the adults were $10.00 each. I have never left a place without leaving a tip but this time my husband made a point of telling not to. To be very honest I would have enjoyed a peanut butter sandwich more. The 6 items plus the 2 soup I listed above were all that were offered. I would like to add that we are not overly fussy hard to please people but this was our worst dining experience EVER!

Putting the "Boo" in Bamboo. Well I must start...

Putting the "Boo" in Bamboo. Well I must start this review by saying that I was very disappointed. I had heard that the Bamboo East Chinese restaurant had very good food. Indeed, they had previously, apparently, made enough money to have this brand-new building built just for them! But, to call our meal "Lackluster" would be praise. Our order was: appetizers- eggroll and hot & sour soup; main course- pork lo mein, and "chicken rolls" with stir-fry vegetables; for beverages, one Bacardi cooler, one local lager beer. The hot & sour soup was odd: I've never had it before, and it did have a nice spice to it- not too spicy for the average patron, and with lots of crunchy bamboo shoots, etc. But it as unpleasant to look at: the liquid was semi--viscous and GREY! It had the appearance of dirty dishwater with- things- floating in it. It looked nothing like the many photographs of hot & sour soup I have seen. The Pork Lo Mein had the look and texture of re-heated leftovers. Enough said there. The "Chicken Rolls" were bizarre: the batter was sweet— too sweet— like the batter on "Bobo Balls", but wrapped around chicken and something else I didn't recognize. Not bad, fairly tasty, but overcooked and difficult to eat. If we had been eating with chopsticks, this would have been impossible, because you need a knife and fork to cut it into bite-size pieces. The stir-fry vegetables weren't bad, but were surreal-looking, with almost fluorescent coloring. As to the restaurant itself, it is only a few years old, yet the floors in the windowless dining room looked as if they hadn't been washed (or even sweeped) within the last month. It was a warm, humid day, yet none of the 3 ceiling fans were turned on, nor was the in-wall air conditioning unit. We were sweatier and hotter when we left than when we arrived. All in all a rather unpleasant experience, and I will NOT be back. To top it all, our small meal of Chinese food, one beer and one rum cooler came to over $52.00, which is WAY too much for what we had, especially for the 3rd-rate quality of the food. This is Chinese food for people who have never been to a GOOD Chinese restaurant. Bamboo East is in a run-down part of Saint John, and apparently makes its money as a take-out chop-suey joint for the locals. Avoid.
