Royal Angkor,without doubt, makes the best Thai food we have ever eaten. Absolutely amazing & we have ordered from them for many many years now... Our favourites are Special 3 & #1. We have NEVER had a bad meal. I should also mention that we often order the same meals & have noticed that it is rare to get the same tasting dish every time. It is the luck of the draw & dependant on how busy they are & how liberal with the spices... And I will reiterate that we have never had a bad meal despite this... Everything is made from scratch and absolutely fantastic.
However, we won't eat in the restaurant unless we go for lunch and get there very early. The restaurant is a dive & certainly gives a bad first impression. The problem with only 2 cooks & huge huge demand is that the service is slow. Certainly well worth the wait, but slow. There is no preferential treatement - items are cooked in the order they are taken - regardless if you takeout or eat in. So we order takeout most times as it is just as hot & just as good.
As an aside, any of the rice dishes make excellent leftovers... So we often order extra dishes just to give more variety & simply take for lunch the next day. When not being run off his feet, the cook is a great guy to chat with - really loves what he is doing & it shows in the quality of the food.
I have artifically given the "services" and "atmosphere" sections 5 stars though they don't deserve it as this the the ony way to give a 5 start overall rating. The restaurant deserves an overall 5 start rating....
Royal angkor, i'm pretty sure, used to be owned by Pat, the kingstonian king of cambodian cuisine. So if pat, even in the slightest, influenced the chef here, you can bet it's gonna be good. And it is, royal angkor is a good place to go if you're tired of americanized asian food.
I ordered the pad thai just because pad thai, in general, is good no matter where you go, and the pad thai here is no exception. Everything was cooked properly, but the only thing about it is I found the sauce a little bit too sweet for my liking. But then again, it comes with a lemon slice, so I guess that's what it's for.
I gave the service a 3/5, but it really deserves maybe a 3.5. Nothing amazing about the service but the guy who works here is definitely more than "adequate". Same goes for the atmosphere, a 3.5. The only thing about this place it is closes in the mid-afternoon, at around 2 I believe (well, it did went, anyways). So if you're still eating at 1:55, the door closes and you get to watch people outside wanting to come in, only to be stuck outside while you're slurping up your delicious pad thai noodles. Make sure you get a seat by the window.
Never had any of the other popular dishes like red curry chicken or golden chicken, but I imagine they are good too
Overall, good place to go, but it's in an area that has a lot of asian restaurants, so it could be missed.

First time trying this place – we started with vegetarian spring rolls which were excellent (3 for $5). For mains we had dish #1 chicken curry/coconut/rice and #21 Vegetarian tofu and pineapple. As mentioned spring rolls were great, but we were left somewhat disappointed with the main meals given such generally positive reviews. Both could could have included more vegetables as #1 came with 2 slices of cucumber and tomato with chicken and rice curry, while #21 had cilantro and green onion with tofu and rice. This is not a very inspiring plate of food - I suppose the description did not specify extra veggies but most restaurants include few more items. Another shortcoming was rice; it was waay overcooked and clumpy + soft, maybe this is not the usual but it was during our visit and did not enhance the meal. We might visit again and try Pad Thai, but lack of vegetables with the dishes and very soft tofu is a huge drawback. The portions were good for the price and we did see a lot of take-out happening - so I guess it works for hungry students or those who add ingredients at home. But as is it was quite sub par.
Kingston's Best Thai, not that I'm a snob and won't eat at most of the others, but this is the best. The samla namya soup here ( Soup D) is great, but maybe thats just my taste of course. The owner is nice, and nothing says home after being away when he notices you haven't been around for awhile, and asks why I had have not brought my usual friends in with me. Its a great low cost meal, but its not a 10min wait, its all made from scratch, so during the lunch rush, plan for the full hour if you don' want to wolf your food down.
I was surprized at the price and the serving size. Super cheap and my dish could feed a family of 3.
I ordered take-out Special #1 : Green Curry Chicken with Eggplant, tons of roots, coconut milk, and rice. I wanted more eggplant and less root. Overall, it was tasty. I had to blow my nose twice because it was very Spicy; but I am a light weight.

My advice if you don't want to wait over an hour for your order is to call ordering ahead (pretend you are a take out customer), then when you come to pick up your food if you want to eat in, just eat it out of the take out containers! I also find the proprietors to be patronizing if not rude. Food is very good, but 5 stars is too much folks.
I've been eating here regularly for some time now, and I adore the food and the couple who runs the place. Don't go here expecting an awesome atmosphere or quick service, but if you want an amazing, fresh cooked, generous meal for under $10.00 it's the place to go.
The entire menu is fantastic, but highlights include the Red Curry Chicken/Shrimp/Tofu, the Cambodian Spring Rolls, both soups, and the Golden Chicken.
This was my first time ordering food from here and I decided to do so based on reviews. I found the owner to be difficult to understand on the phone taking my order but pleasant. When I picked up my food I again found him to be friendly and courteous. I noticed when I drove away thier flyer says they don't open until 5pm during the week however I didn't know this and I called and ordered at 4pm and picked it up at 4:40pm! I felt kind of bad but I guess they wouldn't pick up the phone if they didn't want orders! The food was excellent. The spring rolls were delicious and my panaeng goong was also very very good (I counted 9 shrimps in the dish which isn't too bad for $9.95). I am also a fan of several other thai/cambodian restaurants in Kingston but I have to admit, may come back to this one more often given the food is excellent and with it's location on upper Princess, the parking is much easier too!

This restaurant will probably be the BEST place to retrieve authentic thai/cambodian cuisine. Each dish is individually cooked to perfection, with just the perfect amount of spice. Your taste buds will thank you for going there. I thought the service was incredible, the man who owns the restaurant alongside with his wife and family were incredibly nice. After our meals were served, he'd come out to ask if everything was okay, and get to know us better. So not only are you getting served, you're becoming friends.
I definitely recommend this place, i know of people who go out of their way just to get to this restaurant, and its well worth it!
This place has the best thai food in Kingston! The #1 is amazing at this place. The chef/owner makes each order one at a time to ensure the best flavour and freshness, unlike other thai restaurants in Kingston. This dish blew my mind. Highly recommended to anyone!
The food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. The portion sizes are also great, I'm always stuffed when I leave. I've had #5 countless times (both delivery and in-restaurant) and it has been good every time! Golden chicken is also pretty good, though I wish it had some vegetables other than the hot pepper...
The only downsides are the long wait times for food (but it's a small place and family run, so understandable) and the ambience. The owner isn't the friendliest person in the world, but ah well.
But if you don't care about what the restaurant looks like or don't mind waiting, I would definitely recommend this place. I'm totally addicted to #5!
A bunch of us studied in kingston for 4 years and this place has been one of the best restaurants in town. It's got amazing home cooked cambodian food that leave everybody feeling warm and fuzzy inside especially when it's warm. I highly recommend...always call them ahead of time if you want to eat there cause it might get busy on friday, saturday and sunday because of take outs.
it's a family restaurant and the dishes are great I'm sure my friends and I all agree that we'll go back for it again if we ever pass by kingston..maybe the next time it will be for homecoming!
I throughly enjoyed my #1 as it was the first time that I have enver eaten here. My two buddies ordered a #1 and #6, they are both seasoned vets in this place, and also were impressed by how good it was. I highly recommend the Royal Angkor for an inexpensive meal with lots of kick and flavour! The chef/waiter is not rude, he is not from here and his english lacks but I feel that it adds and authenticity to the place. I like real food and this is a real restaurant.
The chef/waiter/owner was so rude to us. We asked how long it would take since it was like 45 minutes already, and he blew up in front of us with all the tables around us staring at him. The food was not that great either. Never going back. People like those should not have a business that interacts with customers.
I order from here AT LEAST twice a week! I've tried all the other thai/cambodian restaurants in Kingston but the food here is bar none the best!! If you want to dine in make it on the weekday because it gets absolutely packed on the weekends! (And you'll have trouble finding a seat) The service is a little slow but all the meals are individually prepared on the spot so in the end it's definitely worth the wait!
