Funky Thai Restaurant

Surprised they are still open!

I have been cooking professionally for 10 years now. Never have i had an account to review restaurants until today!- in fact this dismal effort of what they serve as thai food brings shame, utter disappointment and embarrassment to my profession. I am trained contemporary french, however my favorite tastes come from asian inspiration which helped me to understand what REAL thai food is.- let me tell you, this is not the place to find it. Save your money, 30 dollars ( after discounted- even though i should have refused to pay) would have been better spent either cooking the dishes myself or macdonalds. Sad day in the culinary world. I usually bite my tongue and put on a fake smile and tell most servers/cooks that the food was okay even when its not. New year - new leaf. Horrible !

Nothing inspired here...and the grease!

Read reviews first and good seemed to out weigh bad with all those raving fans but really? This is boring food, (people... fusion means combining elements from different cultures into one dish NOT serving dishes from different countries!) Mostly though... do they ever change the grease for deep frying...old, old old? Taster Combo - mini shrimp rolls cooked to extinction, spring rolls taste of old grease, chewy beef satay under a large glop of tasteless peanut sauce. Pumped up chicken, and cold chewy spring rolls. Off to a poor start. I mean, I cook Thai food and could have winged it with thai paste, coconut milk and poured it over rice with better results! Had my teenagers with me so ventured where I don't normally go. Son ate chalky paste Singapore noodles worthy of mall food, daughter went with sweet, sweet Kung Pao chicken and a decent portion of brocoli (thank goodness)...both of these are Chinese but they didn't know that. Red curry w beef was spicy and pretty good but over taken with green peppers and the quality of the beef was chewy. Truly bummed...it was so not worth the price and much better places in Oakville...a little competition opening up the street called Thai Smile so maybe they will sharpen up. Service was ok when they weren't ignoring us. Very disappointed.

Pad thai made with ketchup.....Couldn't even eat enough to satisfy my hunger.Two bites and I couldn't eat anymore. I now make my own pad thai with sauce made from tamarind, fish sauce, and soy. The way it was meant to be..Not with ketchup--yuck!!

Great tasting food but the service is really questionable!!! Absolutely love the appetizers and have tried so many and love them all! Love the Cantonese chow mein - so crispy and the flavour is like no other! We still go because the food is soooooooo worth the wait and lousy staff!

Taking Thai to a Higher Level

I can’t think of another restaurant type that has seen such an insurgent rise in this area as Thai. I suspect Thai has become the new Italian in 905-land. Actually, it might be more correct to refer to them as "Pan Asian" as they seem to universally offer samples of the cuisines of most of the region's countries. Funky Thai distinguishes itself from the typical small and humble neighborhood Thai restaurant with it's considerably more formal interior design and food presentation. It's actually quite a pleasant surprise upon entering as somewhat oddly the restaurant is attached to a discount unbranded gas station. We enjoyed our appetizers with the exception of the calamari which was cooked so well beyond done that they were served tightly curled into solid little rolls that defied cutting with the knives provided. Our mains were uniformly satisfying with the vegetables sautéed al dente and notable for their freshness. The beef in the Ho Fun was particularly tender. The flavorful spicy dishes gently cleared our sinuses without having them permanently singed. Our server was cheerful and prompt and our water glasses were kept full. During our meal there were a few small lapses, there were no paper towels in the Men's Room and no one inquired if we were enjoying our food. Lastly, about both the Restaurantica Food and Services scores above: "Great overall", maybe not, but certainly well above "Adequate", thus the 4 stars for their extra efforts in food presentation and atmosphere. Funky Thai is well worth a try as they are well above average for restaurants in this rapidly growing sector. .

My boyfriend and I decided to try this place based on some of the older reviews. They must have gone through changes since those reviews because the food was not very good nor did it taste like authentic Thai. We ordered 3 dishes to share and none of them were very appetizing. We're not going to go back since there are other options for Thai food in our neighborhood now.

We were in the neighborhood a couple months ago and decided to try this place. Some of the staff were polite and some weren't. At first impression the food tastes very "Chinese food" like. I'm certain the cooks are Chinese, judging from the food style and taste. We ordered 3 different Thai dishes to share, one being a curry dish. I forget the other 2. It's not really authentic Thai food. We eat a lot of Thai food but to people who don't get it as often, it's probably fine to them.

My boyfriend and I had been looking for a great, inexpensive Thai restaurant and we definitely found that here! It's in a strange location and looks kind of like a "hick diner" from the outside, but once you walk inside, the decor and atmosphere are breathtaking. The staff were very friendly and acknowledged us right away. Once we were seated, our drink orders were taken very promptly, as well as our appetizer (spring rolls). Almost as soon as we ordered our meals (pad thai) our appetizer came along - EXTREMELY fast.. The display was so nice, I almost didn't want to eat them! But they were incredibly delicious. We had about one more bite left of our spring rolls when our meals came out. VERY VERY fast!! Probably less than 10 minutes! This was a nice surprise as there were quite a few other customers there and we customer running in to pick up take out orders. The pad thai's were HUGE and so so delicious. Best pad thai we've ever had. I even had leftovers for lunch the next day and it still tasted great reheated. Throughout the meal, the server was so friendly and attentive, making sure to refill our waters before they got less than 1/4 empty. Our bill came to $29 - amazing for such a wonderful experience! We will definitely, definitely return again soon!

Excellent tastes ignite our passion for Thai...

We have been looking for a great restaurant lately, and as we were passing by, we saw Funky Thai, so we thought we should go and try the food. The atmosphere was breathtaking, the scenery well balanced the flavourful tastes of the Thai and Vietnamese dishes. Service: We were greeted politely, by the servers who gestured us to our seats, and offered us their menus. The menu, gave plenty options so that we were never bored, more intreged by the many flavours and blends of spices described. Generally, before in other asian oriented restaurants the servers show you your seats, and leave you there and wait for you to adress them. But there was none of that here, the waitresses generously helped us, as she passed by regularly, to check how we were doing. Lets just say we were guilt free of handing a large tip to the servers! Food: The rice and dishes, were generously garnished and beautifully finished. But the taste was even better... The beef tenderloin was tender, and mouthwatering as the rice helped give a clean taste to refresh your palette. Mean while the Shrimp Cold Rolls were, healthy and left us craving for more! And last but not least our favourite dish, was the Thai General Tao Chicken, which was so flavourful as we describe it as "bursts of spices that represent the thai culture". Value: The Food here was wonderful, portion wise plentiful, and worth it's value as we couldn't help but feel glowing as we left. Conclusion: All in all I have to say this was one of the best places we've ever been to (this coming from a traveler who, travels around the globe for work)! Memorable, breathtaking scenery, mouth watering food, and of course excellent friendly service. We will definately come back to Oakville just for this experience again, just to have a fine funky time!

Don't judge what you can't see

First off, my original take on this restaurant was an easy pass. The location is right next to a gas station, and for the better part of last year, I thought it was a part of the station itself. However, since the windows are tinted, it's very hard to see what's actually inside. A semi-casual asian restaurant next to a gas station in the middle of a highway, who knew? food: The menu seems to have an identity crisis. They offer foods from china, vietnam, Thailand, canada, Singapore, japan, malaysia. And so, the menu is a huge mess. The food was also misleading. This was when I ordered a BBQ chicken. What part of BBQ means deep fried and battered? nothing! However, judging by the wok sounds and the rice and noodle dishes, they have nice wok equipment. Service: My impression of all asian restaurants is that they take your order and then leave you to your food without checking up on you. However, being situated in the upper part of oakville, that preconception has changed somewhat. Service was friendly by western standards and was very helpful in the ordering process. However, I still had to go to the counter and ask for my bill. Value: The food here is decent, but for the prices they're asking for, I expected a bit more. Considering that if I go 30 km Eastward, I can get the same quality of food for a fraction of the price. In conclusion: It's not very memorable considering that I have tasted more traditional foods and travel into the asian areas often. The funky thai has to be a lot more funkier if it wants my attention.

Bland, bland, bland

We took our food to take-out so there was no sending it back. It was so bland. Not at all what I would expect of Thai food which is usually so flavourful. We would NOT return.

Disappointing... we've had better elsewhere.

We popped in at Funky Thai to get take outs and were immediately impressed with very friendly service. The food, however, was very disappointing.. Both curry dishes were waterly and tasteless. We couldn't believe that they could sell dishes like these! The value is not good either as these dishes don't even come with rice despite the steep price tag. Another Thai restaurant we frequent offers way better quality food for good value (they give you either steamed rice or coconut rice with all curry dishes). Never again. Maybe other dishes are better?? But we are not willing to waste our money into another potential disappointment.

My wife and I love food from all cultures. From the day the Funky Thai opened, it has been our favourite restaurant and we have had everything on their menu. All of it has been excellent. The service has always been courteous, friendly and efficient. We dine at noon and dinner hours and we prefer dining in versus take out because we find it tastes far better fresher right out of the kitchen. There is one attribute about this cuisine at this restaurant that my wife and I notice consistently. We always feel healthy, well and energized the day of and the day after dining at Funky Thai. We dine at many restaurants and we cannot say the same about them. Funky Thai is a treasure.

Fabulous ! I'm not a curry lover but I am a true lover of seafood. Funky Thai 2 Go has awakened my taste buds to Curry and blend it with Seafood. The out come is now my “ new favourite” dish! Being from the East Coast and raised on fresh Seafood, I’m normally a purist. I’m now a devotee of Funky Thai 2 Go. I was describing the splendour of this dish to Barry, he said he had to try it. He is now a devoted convert to Funky Thai 2 Go. Give it a try you'll not be disappointed. Very friendly and helpful staff. Just an all around pleasant experience.

I went for a family dinner. I made reservations for six but two people were added to the party at the last minute. The staff was very accommodating and quickly reorganized another table for us. The service was quick and friendly. The food was excellent; all the ingredients were fresh, and the dishes were tasty. The General Tao Chicken is to die for .... all breast meat. The price of the meal was also quite reasonable for eight people. I will definitely be returning.

I live around the corner, and eat here a lot. Always take out however. Folks are very friendly, food is VERY fresh, and flavor is among the best I've had. I highly recommend it
