Once the hot weather hits, our appetites change drastically. Gone is the need for comforting stews and casseroles. Instead, our craving for cold dishes packed with fresh, vibrant flavours and drinks that quench our thirst, skyrocket. Here are my top picks to help keep you cool this season.

Home Of The Brave Inc

1
589 King St W, Toronto ON M5V 1M5

Beer is often the go-to drink of summer, but remember the slushes of your youth? How they cooled you down in an instant and delivered a sugary high that lasted long after the cup had emptied? Home of the Brave has created a grown-up version - Jack (Daniels) and Coke Slushie ($7) - that is one of the best ways to stay cool this summer and get your drink on at the same time.

Smoked & Cracked Ltd

516 Mount Pleasant Rd, Toronto ON M4S 2M2

Lobster rolls are on every menu it seems right now, but few get is right. The ones served in Boston and Cape Cod have very little mayo and the lobster is the real focus of the meal.

3040 Dundas St W, Toronto ON M6P 1Z3

Husband and wife Jennifer Rashleigh and Jeff Brown have been making mouthwatering handmade ice cream from natural, organic ingredients for the last decade. They insist on using premium products such as Grass Fed Harmony Organic milk and cream, certified local Food Plus eggs, organic fair trade chocolate and sugar as well as local organic or L.F.P. certified seasonal fruit. They even hand make their own waffle cones using flour from Merrylynd Organics.

Soulas Modern Greek Cuisine

4
500 Danforth Avenue, Toronto ON M4K 1P6

here is nothing better than a cold salad when the sun’s rays are beating down. And Ouzeri on the Danforth is one of the few places that offers an authentic Greek salad ($10.95). This isn’t the one you’re used to with lettuce (although they do offer that version - $8.95). No, the Horiatiki salad forgoes the lettuce and instead focuses on tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, olives and feta. Tossed with extra virgin olive oil and oregano, it’s quite refreshing and surprisingly filling.

Milagro Cantina on Mercer

5
5 Mercer St, Toronto ON M5V 1H2

There is a real art to a great ceviche. First of all, you have to choose seafood that is firm enough to stand up against all that liquid. Then, you must “cook” it with enough citrus that it penetrates the meat and also delivers a dynamic finish. One of the best places to get real ceviches is Milagro Cantino. Arturo and brother Andrés Anhalt hail from Mexico City and know what it takes to make a stellar ceviche.

Sitting on the dock of the bay, or a patio downtown, or in the cool comfort of an air conditioned restaurant, nothing says summertime like fish and chips. Here are the city’s top 5 spots:

One of the best ways to spend a summer evening is to catch a show. Whether you’re going out to a big theatre production such as Newsies or Kinky Boots, or you’re heading off to hear a performance by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company or Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra & Chamber Choir, you’re going to want to eat beforehand.
