Aliki's Art House

Anyone can be an artist at Aliki’s Art House in Cambrian Heights. The sunny studio focuses on the fundamentals, encouraging students to be confident and hit the canvas running. During the week, Aliki’s offers drawing classes but also open-studio art sessions in which students work on their own projects with the guidance of instructors. These classes are perfect for artists who know the basics, but need a creative space to work in. Combo sessions are offered as well as one-day intensive drawing classes on weekends. Supplies are available for an extra charge. Private lessons are available by appointment.

North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre

North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre offers ceramic and visual arts classes in a quaint heritage building in northwest Calgary. Built as a school in 1913, over a century later, it remains a learning facility for students of all ages. Let your creative juices flow in its well-lit, modernized studio space. Tons of regular programs are available including artful bookbinding, clay sculpture making, drawing and painting fundamentals, as well as combo sessions that may include a mix of ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking and more.

This Inglewood art studio offers a variety of ongoing art classes for adults including “mini-sessions” for those in need of a wee bit of guidance and inspiration. Classes are project based and incorporate the instruction of basic artistic techniques. Class themes change regularly. For example, students may create clay creatures and woodland watercolour paintings or maybe learn to paint bright and beautiful flowers in the style of the impressionist masters.

Swinton’s Art carries supplies from canvas and brushes to paints, paper and frames as well as offering classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced artists. Their facility features four studio spaces, classes, workshops as well as technique demonstrations. Monthly four-course sessions allow students to choose from a range of class times as well as mediums – drawing, acrylic, watercolour and oil paint as well as drawing. Can’t pick a medium? Try a Saturday afternoon sampler class. Workshops are available for advanced students, and learners of all levels are welcome at Tuesday-evening drop-in figure-drawing sessions.

Green Palette Arts offers art instruction that’s a little looser than other studios. Instructors offer guidance and suggestions as well as basic exercises for beginners, but students of all levels work largely on their own. Sign up for a monthly membership to attend weekly three-hour classes in this inspiring space. Bring your own painting supplies (oil, acrylic or watercolour) and ideas, and make art at your own pace.

Grasby Art Studio

Grasby Art Studio offers visual arts classes for beginner and intermediate students. Learn to draw and paint in oil, acrylic and watercolour or create mixed media artworks and glass mosaics. Located southwest of the intersection of Deerfoot Trail and Glenmore Trail Southwest, Kensington Art Supply carries a wide range of art products as well as offering courses, workshops and demonstrations for beginner to advanced artists. Flexible classes in your choice of medium (drawing, painting, etc.) operate on a four-times-monthly basis, and drop-ins are welcome when space permits. One-day sampler sessions allow participants to dabble in a number of mediums. Artist demonstrations are presented free of charge on Saturday mornings.

Artopia Studios

Artopia hosts drop-in, adult-only, open-studio time on Tuesday afternoons from noon to 7 pm. Work in this creative space for a modest hourly or daily rate. While these sessions don’t include instructor guidance, they do offer storage space and free materials. Regular painting classes are held on weekends and are available as single drop-in sessions or as a package deal. The featured medium changes regularly. Artopia also hosts bridal parties, date nights, corporate events, ladies nights, ceramic and glass classes, adult cartoon drawing tutorials, pottery wheel sessions and other one-off workshops.
