Diverse Indian restaurants full of flavor in Edmonton

Here is a list of my top East Indian restaurants in Edmonton. I think you’ll find that they cater to all tastes and that you’ll love the diversity that exists right on our doorstep.

Sambol Sri Lankan Kitchen

1
9261 34 Avenue NW, Edmonton AB T6E 5T5

This is another restaurant that is more Sri Lankan but with some beautiful South Indian dishes on the menu. I absolutely love the string hopper bowls, which remind my of my mom’s, and their kotthu roti (spiced, shredded roti with vegetables and/ or meat) – it’s to die for.

Kathir Food Experience Inc

2
9318 34 Ave NW, Edmonton AB T6E 5X8

This is what I’d call my ‘local’ spot. I am from the south of India and, to me, it is comfort food at its best. Kathir has an extensive dosa (rice crepes) menu, and while I am very traditional in my preference for the simple masala dosa, they have some exciting variations, as well. I also like their thalis (a collection of small dishes, both vegetarian and not) for lunch. They have a Sunday special of Appams that are delicious with a simple fish or chicken curry. The atmosphere is fine, but you really only go there for the food.

Khazana Restaurant

3
10177 107 St NW, Edmonton AB T5J 1J5

Khazana has beautiful décor and atmosphere, and I love the fact that their kitchen is designed after the famous ITC Bukhara restaurant in India. The food is classic North Indian, with a few South Indian specialties. This is a great restaurant if you’re looking for some good Indian food downtown.

Narayanni's Restaurant

4
10131 81 Avenue NW, Edmonton AB T6E 1W9

South African meets Indian. Narayanni’s is the closest I’ve found to the authentic African-Indian cuisine that I used to enjoy in England. The food is gorgeous, healthy – by Indian restaurant standards – and uses local, organic ingredients that really set this restaurant apart. It’s easily some of the best Indian fusion in town, and they always have different dishes on their buffet menu, which makes dining there an adventure.

Guru Fine Indian Cuisine

5
17021 100 Ave NW, Edmonton AB T5S 1T9

If you are looking for fine dining, Indian-style, then you head to Guru on Edmonton’s West side. Chef Deependra Singh is well known for his twist on classic North Indian food. It is beautifully presented and very palate friendly. The butter chicken samosas are now an Edmonton classic, and I love his take on coconut and chocolate naan for dessert.

Zaika Indian Bistro Bar

If you are in Ellerslie, you need to go find Zaika. This is an Indian restaurant, bistro style, and the dishes are all zesty, fresh with classic Indian flavours presented in a modern style. I love the cool, contemporary interiors and the healthy-ish Indian food they serve.

Maria Northern Mexican Cuisine

6
10220 103 St Nw, Edmonton AB T5J 0Y8

Haweli is a great place to go for an executive lunch downtown. The service is quick and I love that you can watch the naan being made in their indoor tandoori oven. The food is a mix of North Indian with street food, but I like the classic recipes and the fact that it is very reasonably priced for downtown.

Daawat Multi Kitchen & Bar

7
10355 82 Ave Nw, Edmonton AB T6E 1Z9

Daawat is located on trendy Whyte Avenue and is a must-go-to place if you are in the area. Like most Indian restaurants in Edmonton, it serves classic North Indian dishes, with a touch of the South and street food. I like their Chai – which is poured from an old fashioned chai pot, and their simple masala dal.

Masala Wok Restaurant

8
9348 34 Ave Nw, Edmonton AB T6E 5X8

Masala Wok is a restaurant that features all those classic Indian-Chinese mash-ups that India is famous for. From Hakka noodles to chicken Manchurian and Indian street food, this is the place I go to relive my student memories of terribly inauthentic ‘Chinese’ food.
