What makes a good “girls night out” spot? Only the girls know for sure, but you can bet that it involves a combination of great music and wine, fun atmosphere and a lot of laughs. These Calgary venues offer all this and more.

The Bank & Baron

Situated in the downtown Bank of Nova Scotia historical building, this glitzy watering hole is as fun and sociable as it looks. Elegantly furbished in dark wood and featuring a cushy combo of chairs and banquette seating, its upper level overlooks a grand central bar. Also features cocktails and contemporary pub grub you can bank on.

A popular stop for evening venue hoppers, this Kensington Village spot is great for dinner and drinks. Order French bistro-inspired mains, or a selection of shareables from cheese plates and charcuterie to oysters and small-plate snacks. Wine is naturally in good supply, but also consider sampling the sherry selection.

Tapas and wine make for a mighty fine time at Vin Room. Its flagship location in an old bike shop on Fourth Avenue Southwest is cozy and intimate inside. In warm weather, its rooftop patio, which overlooks the activity of the avenue, can’t be beat. The venue’s Enomatic Wine System makes sampling superb.

A feature on the clubby 10th Avenue Southwest strip, the menu at this stylishly converted warehouse restaurant is suitably bistro-inspired and features some of Calgary’s best Canadian-contemporary food. Groups can choose from a wide selection of shareable small plates. Ask for a recommendation from the inventive cocktail list.

The quintessential Mexican meal, tacos are also a relatively scarce commodity in Calgary. However, we’ve done some digging and unearthed the select few restaurants that make truly marvelous versions of these hand-held snacks.
The city’s summer season features a delicious dance card of culinary festivals and events. Many, such as Stampede-time pancake breakfasts, are easy to access the day of, but the various tasting and tippling shindigs listed here can fill up quickly, so purchasing tickets sooner than later for these foodie festivities is recommended.
