How are you celebrating Earth Day? With which food?Getting food as close to home as possible not only supports local farmers and producers, but promotes sustainable agriculture. It also cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions.Here are the top five spots that you might not know are committed to serving local and sustainable ingredients and reducing their environmental footprint. Balzacs Coffee Ltd

Did you know that the multiple locations of Balzac’s Cafes are LEAF certified? Working to reduce the environmental impact of the food service industry, LEAF is the only national food service certification of its kind. According to LEAF, restaurants use five times more energy per square foot than other commercial businesses and nearly 100% of restaurant waste can be diverted from the landfill.

Located in a residential neighbourhood on Ossington, this Canadian restaurant harvests from their urban garden out back and uses seasonal ingredients for their creative menus. There are three menus to choose from - Chef's Menu (seven courses), Summary Menu (four courses) and the Neighbourhood Menu (2 courses and a glass of wine - $30).

Hawthorne Food and Drink

Hawthorne Food & Drink not only serves "Farm-to-Fork City Food" using local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients, and are a part of OCTA’s FeastON program.They also happen to be located on the the ground floor of 60 Richmond Street East, a LEED certified cooperative complex. LEED certification provides "independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality." There are four possible levels of LEED certification - certified, silver, gold and platinum. Hawthorne is located in a Gold LEED certified building. How cool is that?

On a cold, snowy Edmonton night, nothing says lovin’ like a cup of hot chocolate.
