Some people may not realize that 118 Avenue, the area known as Alberta Avenue, is a treasure trove of interesting restaurants. While you won’t find many high-end dining establishments along this street, you will find a variety of delicious cuisines in low-key, comfy spots.

Lan's Asian Grill Ltd

This family-run restaurant serves up Asian cuisine at a reasonable price. Located in a strip mall near NAIT, the inside of the restaurant is surprisingly cute. The menu is a decent size, with a variety of popular dishes, such as pad Thai, green onion cakes, red curry and Thai basil stir fry. The portions are big, making it a good spot for sharing a meal with a friend.

Alberta Avenue is home to this delightful Ukrainian restaurant and deli. Known for its amazing perogies and sausage, all of the meat comes from Mundare Sausage in Mundare, Alberta. This is true Ukrainian cuisine that you can dig into – no one will judge you if you get a little sour cream on your face.

Located near Rexall Place, this is a popular spot for a bite to eat before a hockey game or concert. And while it might not look like much on the outside, this spot is known for having excellent, high-quality steak that tastes like an angel blessed the cow before it went to meat heaven. They also serve up tasty ribs. And if you’re not a fan of beef, the pizza is pretty stellar too – a lot of people order it to go and enjoy it at home.

This barbecue joint is known for massive portions and cheekily named menu items, such as The Cure and My Ridiculous Fat Ass. It’s often said it’s impossible to finish a meal here, and it’s true – you do need to be fairly determined and extremely hungry in order to do so. But, hey, there is no shame in bringing some of your chicken and waffles or beef brisket home with you. The pulled pork is always a delight, and the list of desserts is an endless road of sugary delights.

When you’re craving tortilla soup and tamales, this is a great spot to get your fix of Mexican cuisine. It’s a cozy spot, so go early and go often – you need to go back multiple times just to try all of the amazing things on the menu. The pupusas, corn tortillas filled with a hearty mixture of cheese, refried beans and pulled pork, are very popular here. The kitchen is good at accommodating gluten-free requests.
