Everyone really enjoyed the various meals that were delivered promptly by a very courtious young lady. The place seemed very busy but the coffee pot was still circulated and offered quite a few times... REAL Scandinavian!!!. That was a real treat.. We all agreed that the food was great and reasonably priced... we would go back.
I was given a generous serving of everything. My eggs were done to perfection. Service was timely. Waitressescontinually refilled coffee cups-without prompting. To the air head that said that the home fries were boiled potatoes fried up and bland I say: Then sweedish cooking isn't for you. My family is sweedish and yes the food at times is underflavored, but dude what did you expect? Go elsewhere. At least there are no spices to bother my hernia. The coffee like most restaurants could be better. It tasted weak, low grade, but then I love a good cup of java. Tea next time for me. The receptionist at the front desk everyone complains about- ya she doesn't seem friendly. After all these reviews why don't they fire her? Oh she must own the place. Well as of now I can't wait to enjoy another meal. But if she gets crotchety with me I'll reluctantly find another spot.
BACK IN THE DAY The Scanadnavian home was known for Great food at a great price atmophere was like "being at home" everyone was welcome. Today the scan home IS the WORST resturant in thunder bay by far,the food is GARBAGE! the service is horrible the waitress's are rude and all have adduitude's the manager if that's what you call him seem's to be a bit on the weird side and dirty,probly why the resturant is falling apart. CAN'T WAIT TILL NEVAS OPENS UP!! JUNE 6TH!
The Scand home has gone downhill. We waited a half hour at the door, which isn't uncommon and we had expected it on the weekend. However, while standing there we noticed that virtually no one (and remember that all tables were full) had any food on their tables. They claimed that the service was so slow because of a high amount of pancake orders. odd but true. Once we were seated it took another 45 minutes to get our breakfast orders. The pancakes didn't taste like they used to at all and the scrambled eggs were totally bland. How could anyone mess up scrambled eggs? The homefries were awful. (They seemed like boiled potatoes warmed up on a greasy grill.) No one came to offer drink refills or check on our food and the tea was barely luke warm. Also , i noticed that several things were on the floor such as a napkin, fork and menu, and staff just walked around or over them rather than picking them up. Seemed like a safety issue to me, so i picked them up myself.
Also - there is an extraordinary amount of noise in the building due to the acoustics. not a great place for someone with a hearing disorder or who is elderly.
So all in all, the scand home has gone way down hill...from what i can tell. hate to admit it.
the food was awsome,the coffee girl was very nice and had a great smile ..my watress was great..a little to loud in there for chatting..the cashier was a bit on the ummmm cranky side to put it nicely..
I love the "Scan" it is the best for breakfasts, or lunches for that matter. It is a shame they are not open for suppertime. Food is homemade, baking is great and staff are super.
The old drawback is that the new building's accoustics are not great - it becomes very noisy when the restaurant if full and voices seem to bounce back making conversations difficult. But the food makes it all worthwhile. Prices are great too!

The food is home cooking. All the baking is made on the premises. The yummy coffee bread & cinnamon buns are fabulous. The soup is fresh. There are daily specials. The small meal is an excellent value including favourites like Swedish Meatballs, Meatloaf, roasbeef, roast chicken & roast pork.
The staff are great. This place always flies under the radar, but perhaps that's good. Best kept secret in town!

I love the this restaurant....it is by far one of the most under rated restaurants in Thunder Bay. Everything is so tasty and the servers always remember what I ordered and give me quality service. The food comes out in no time and it is delicious.
The service is still phenomenal, with servers taking multiple orders and never writing them down, and still getting them completely accurate. The food is a great 'comfort' type, always good and always the same as before, leading to a great sense of stability. Very fast, very filling, and very affordable. The new building takes away from the cozy atmosphere a bit but the restaurant overall is for the better for it, allowing more seating and such. Highly recommended.
THE SCAN HOUSE HAS THE BEST ALL-DAY BREAKFAST ANYWHERE! I RECOMEND THE LUMBERJACK SPECIAL OR AN ORDER OF FINN PANCAKES WITH STRAWBERRIS & WHIP CREAM WITH THE BEST HOME FRIES (ASIDE FROM MY MOM'S) IN TOWN. THEY RECENTLY MOVED INTO THEIR NEW LOCATION (NEXT DOOR TO THE OLD ONE), VERY NICE, BIG, AND ROOM FOR MORE PEOPLE. NOT AS COZY AS THE ORIGINAL AND A LITTLE LOUDER, HOWEVER THE FRIENDLY STAFF THAT HAVE ALL BEEN THERE FOREVER MAKES UP FOR ANY COMPLAINT A PERSON CAN HAVE ABOUT THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!

The breakfast was great, the Scan has always been a favourite of ours. The service was phenomenal; very pleased with the friendly, quick hospitality we received. One expection however is the unpleasant host/cashier; she has been rude to me and my family for the last time.
i first came to this restaurant because of the good reviews but i have to say in my personal opinion it was very innacurate the service was good and i guess my bad rating would be due to the rude obnoxious individual at the front desk her attitude was such a turn off where it got to the point were i lost my entire appetite , and the only way i would go back there is if she was not there.
The food is typical Scandinavian cuisine. Everything on the menu is "homey" and pretty plain but tasty. The pancakes are famous and pretty yummy. However - the atmosphere is a bit like a cafeteria and not very warm and cozy. it is very loud in there too....too loud to chat.
The food is pretty good, but when i went there, the service was terrible, i was treated so badly for no reason what so ever. I gave the server respect, and she was very rude and sarcastic.
