Bike Sauce

Whether you’re a city dweller or a commuter, chances are you’ve had to get somewhere in a hurry. This is partly why, come summertime, bikeSauce is crawling with the most eccentric mix of individuals. Since 2009 this DIY bike repair shop on Broadview Avenue has been attracting tradesmen, office professionals, even the unemployed - basically anyone who rides a bike.

Cycling is less expensive than a taxi and parking and is often more convenient than public transportation, says bikeSauce volunteer Kim: “It’s a fantastic way to get around and it’s one of the fastest ways to get around the city.”

“Walking is nice if you have the time,” adds Alex Tritton, another volunteer.

But transportation talk aside, bikeSauce is about neighbours helping neighbours. "I think the bikes are almost second to building a community," says Anibal Davila, who opened bikeSauce in the east-end neighbourhood to fulfill a void that Bike Pirates, Anibal's older DIY bike shop, did in the west end.  He adds that the whole concept started in his garage in Kensington Market and grew from there. "We saw the need to spread the love," he says.
