With only a scant few months from May to September in which plants and shrubs can really take off and several months in between where perennials die back, leafless trees do little more than hold the snow, and grasses lie dormant until there’s enough sun and warmth to coax them back to life, the growing season in Canada is not nearly as long as it should be.

Michael Renaud, owner of Horticultural Design Inc., knew there had to be another option and set his sights on making gardens look spectacular all year round. “We will do garden design, but we also do the detailing of it,” he says. “So, we’ll suggest, let’s say, front planters for the house. We’ll suggest lighting, creating an outdoor living space and outdoor detail, like statuaries and fountains to accessorize the garden.”

Michael’s work, which combines an artistic flair with a keen eye for space and perspective, has resulted in gardens and yards all over the city that look like they belong in a model home magazine.
