Terrible and overprices

This used to be a place where you could go for a great meal at a good price. But those days are long gone on my last trip they charged 18.00 for a wiener schnitzel they was essentially all breading with some mysterious meat in between and not much of that. To bad I have fond memories of CS from years back but they will never see me again. The food was overpriced garbage, no wonder at 7pm on a Saturday night the restaurant was empty maybe they will get the message but I doubt it. Sad really sad!!!!!

This place is great if you're looking for cafeteria food. Their excuse for a paprikás was the most basic, gelatinous kind of gravy I've ever had. There really wasn't any paprika in it, or any of the other typical ingredients that go into a paprikás (tomatoes, peppers and onions, anything really). Just like canned gravy. We also ordered the mushroom schnitzel, and the galuska it came with had the same lard/gravy dobbed onto it. As a Hungarian, I'm sorry to say Country Style is a really poor representation of authentic Hungarian food. For those of you considering to go to this restauraunt, I highly encourage you to open any old Hungarian cookbook and give it a try yourself. You'll easily make something more authentic!

I've been returning for YEARS

Bloor street used to be very European till the japanese sushi places took over. There were several great Hungarian restaurants in the area. Country Style is one of the few places left where there is still an old world charm coupled with great food at even better prices. The ONE bad review for this restaurant shows that people DO return to Country Style because it's a great place to eat. I've eaten just about everything on the menu and the ONLY dish I had a slight issue with was the Chicken Paprikas (and that's ONLY because I love it how my mamma makes it best). Apart from that I would highly give this restaurant a chance and often bring friends, guests and dates here. *Cheers!

A guaranteed weekly visit during my university...

A guaranteed weekly visit during my university years way back in the mid 1980s - the best meal on a student budget! It is a must visit everytime I visit TO, and the food is exactly the same - superb-tasting and huge portions. I sent my sister and her husband there and they could not believe the amount of food, the delicious food, and the incredibly cheap prices ! I have even taken pictures of the schnitzel - monstrous !!! Still the same friendly servers and cozy setting - I can't wait for the next visit !! Truly wonderful !!

I love this place and have been dining here for over 20 years whenever my vegetarian partner is out of town (this is no place for vegans). Sometimes the schnitzel is a tad overdone, but often it's perfect, and the servings and the service are generous and comforting. It is one of the only truly homey and welcoming restaurants left in the Spadina-to-Bathurst stretch.

A favourite spot when in Toronto, and an icon of Hungarian cuisine! I have never had anything but an excellent dining experience here, in a homey and cosy and unassuming atmosphere. (and I've been a patron for years!) No indigestion EVER! And, yeah, sometimes the breading flakes of the schnitzel, but sometimes, schnitzel happens.

I read the review in theToronto Star Feb...

I read the review in theToronto Star Feb 14 2007. Great review but experience was no where near the review My partner that dinned with me is hungarian. Cabbage rolls were $13.95 for 2 cabage rolls. We decided that they must be terrific so decided to split them even though it seemed quite pricey We added weiner shnitzell between us. Our order was delivered quite quickly and with a pleasant attitude. The cabbage rolls were very large and sitting on a bed of rather bland sauercrout. The cabbage was not very tender and we had trouble cutting it with a basic bread knife provided. I ended up pulling the filling out of the cabbage and discarding the tough cabbage. The filling was absolutely terrible, almost to the point of not being edible. It was a dense mass of mush and you could not determine what was rice or meat. It was barely warm and had a consistency of being previously frozen as they had a grainy texture. I have been making cabbage rolls from my Nanna's recipe for 40 years and she would turn over in her grave if she would have tried this discusting food. On to the shnitsell. THey were quite large in size and looked very appetizing, until we tried to eat them. The meat was paper thin and when trying to cut them ( again with a bread knife), the breading fell completely away from the meat and you were left with a tastless dried piece of who knows what. We could not finish either of these foods. They were served with a few boiled potatoes and even less home fries. Why serve 2 kinds of potatoes is beyond me. There was a small plate of pickled beets that were very bland and a spoonfull of plain rice. The sour cream that was served was the only thing that tasted like it should. The restaurant was quite busy. I have no idea why anyone would return here. The food was terrible and the prices were a rip - off. I am somewhat disabled on one leg. The parking outside was full of packed snow. You would think that a resturanter would make sure that access to there establishment would be kept clean and easily manageable. I fell trying to navigate the snow pile at the curb. Not a good start to what I thought would be a pleasant dinning experince We did not stay very long and both of us had indigestion for the next 2 hours. It goes to show you that a good review in the Star will bring patrons in. I think the Star should consider a new reviewer.
