When we want to order chinese food we always order from here as they deliver to the Katimavik Area of Kanata. Our standing order for them is egg rolls, hot and sour soup, won ton soup, salt and pepper shrimp, shechwan shrimp, beef and brocoli, sweet and sour pork, almond chicken su guy, cantoneses chowmein, chicken fried rice. Sometimes we change a few dishes we love their general taos chicken too as well as their sizzling pepper beef ( not usually available for delivery) It costs approx $80 but it feeds our family of 4 - 2 whole meals and maybe a lunch sent to work too - so feeds about 8-10 people. Food here is comparable to china town in some dishes.
Have returned to Rideau many times with family and friends....always good hot food with large portions.
Take out regularly as well. Atmospher isn't fance but we keep returning because of the friendly service and the good food.
Really wanted to like this place because the location is convenient for us to do take out. Didn’t work out…
General Toa Chicken was greasy and gooey and lacked any individual flavours.
The open end eggrolls looked promising but had a processed meat (canned ham?) after taste that was off putting.
The old stand by fried items tasted like the cooking oil was fresh, so were quite good. (how can you go wrong with anything deep fried?)
Ordered Almond Soo Guy and the chicken was
fresh and very good. However, they forgot to add the almonds so I guess we just had Soo Guy? The gravy was a gray goop. So again, the dish was
below par. I was also unimpressed by the “little extras”. After placing a decent sized order, we got two packages of soya sauce and a small
tub of white rice thrown in. No fortune cookies etc.
Will not order here again.
We could make a meal of their open end roll (egg roll) alone but then we would miss out on the other great dishes. As a take-out restaurant we couldn't ask for more, we haven't used the restaurant but I am sure it would be good.
My family (scottish/irish) have been going to this restaurant since they first opened. Sometimes it is as frequent as once a week. The staff there are always welcoming and cannot do more for you. The food is always made to your specifications and come out steaming. Never have we had bad food, old bats or anything that would cause concern. When we have family and friends visiting from all across Canada we treat them to the Rideau. It is the best Chinese food since Calgary and Vancouver. We always order extra for the next day and vary what we order. and free tea while we wait quite often. All their food is excellent.

This restaurant has at times quite good Cantonese food for Ottawa standards. The problem is you have to be able to stomach the miserable old bats serving.
What disturbs me the most is when Chinese clientele come in they are presented with a complementary hot pot of tea as is usually the norm in these restaurants, on the other hand for all others even if there are tea cups already on the table they are quickly removed. Just remember you want tea and you're not Chinese you pay extra.

After having food delivered many times over the years I visited and ate in the restaurant tonight. The food, as always, was excellent, and the service was also good. The restaurant itself had completely bare walls except for 1 framed picutre and a wall menu of specials that did not have English translations. I would recommend take-out or delivery if you like a nice decor, but this is, in my opinion, the best Chinese food in Kanata.

I wonder if the people who gave this resturaunt a bad review were some of the people who come in with a party of 8 or more during dinner hrs. when it is full and look suprised when the server asks if they made a reservation. I have even witnessed people get upset with the server when they have no empty tables. Shamefull.
This is by far my favorite Cantonese resuraunt in the city. I wish they did Dim Sum so I wouldn't have to go elswhere for that.

The food we order is always good, we always order more than enough so we can sample more dishes. I think the people that gave bad reviews probably ordered canadian style chinese food. They are much better at cooking Authentic Cantonese than fake Chinese food. I'm thankfull that I don't need to go all the way downtown for some good Chinese food.

We ordered multiple items. My girlfriend bit into her eggrole and almost broke her tooth, she had bit into a type of onxy stone, about half a centimeter big, huge by any standards. I was shocked and immediately called the restaurant, they apologized. Watch your teeth!
I have been going to this restaurant once in a while since it has first opened a few years ago. This time we had a sit-down dinner and the food was delicious. Yes, I am Chinese and I found the food was quite good, the greens were "young", the sauce was not too salty and loaded with oils. Our food was quite authentic, fresh and healthy. I see this as good Cantonese restaurant cuisine. Our tea was served and refilled promptly. I didn't have to wave them down for the bill, I looked at someone directly and they took notice immediately. I'm a repeat customer and I can tell they are slowly improving their restaurant atmosphere. The servers are always fast - I never see them standing around chatting to each other and they are always in the main eating area. But I have no complaints about the chef. So, if service is not as fast because of the load of customers, I'm not going to complain. Takeout is fast, too.

Has to be the best Chineese restaurant I visited in a long time. The food is excellent, portions abundant, and the variety is there. The service is good and polite. We do also place orders that I pick up to bring home. They are always on time, and everything comes nice and hot. When I plan to eat chineese food, le Rideau is my first choice.

I come for the food, and that was fantastic.
The portions were just right.
The only suggestion I have to improve is the order in which the dishes were served.
I would have prefered the rice to arrive first, not last.
I will return again for sure.
We like the Rideau Restaurant. We especially love the great combo plates that let you have what you want when only two people go out to dine and you don't want to order too many dishes. We really like being served by the gracious older woman who we think is the owner because she is always there - we are just guessing. We have had many meals at this restaurant and it is always good.
Question: We wonder why, when we are four people and we order 6 dishes (so we can take some home) they cut back on the portions so that you don't get as much food per order as when you order only 4 dishes..? Is there somebody back there deciding how much you "should" get for 4 people rather than standardizing the order size?
We wish they would wash their aprons more often. We wish they would have more staff on the floor. Sometimes we have to wait 15 mins for our bill. We know they are working hard but..put more staff on each shift.
Great food. Try it. Don't go there for the decor or the service - go for the Spring Rolls!

I don't agree with any of you people. I thought the food was o.k., but everything else was horrible, especially the service. I thought that it was really bad and no, they were not polite and mannered at ALL!!! And also, i agree that they should definetly improve on the order of food. Overall, i thought it was horrible and i don't see why i should go back. Thank-you
