Nestled between Queen and King Street West, Jimmy’s Coffee has become a rustic refuge for condo-dwellers in the business district. Blink and you might even miss this narrow Victorian townhouse on Portland Street, whose looks can be deceiving—the café includes an enclosed graffiti-covered back patio, with electrical outlets no less.

Founder Phil Morrison has a knack for setting up shop in unconventional areas and this indie-chain—named Jimmy’s because Phil has never met a Jimmy that he didn’t like—has quickly built a reputation for its welcoming vibe and friendly service.

And while local coffee culture remains a competitive industry, the sense of community found here is what keeps customers loyal. “People don’t go next door for a cup of sugar anymore,” says general manager Elinor Barker. “They come to Jimmy’s Coffee and meet their neighbours for the first time. The regulars know each other by name.”
