Giota Nikolopoulos’ New York Café has been a Greektown landmark for decades, serving hearty diner fare since 1942 at the corner of Broadview and Danforth. Stepping into the two-room restaurant, housed inside a heritage building, is like being transported back in time: the formica tables, retro archways and dark paneling are reminiscent of days gone by.

As the owner, Giota wears many hats. She still serves customers (as does her mom), but also manages all the other aspects of running a business, such as managing staff, many of whom have worked at New York Café for decades. Giota says she is well-suited for the business. “I wouldn’t be okay in an office job,” she says. “I like helping people and the constant excitement.”

One of the best on the Danforth

Have been eating here for years - friendly, terrific staff who remember you! Great food - probably the best pizza in town! Owners actively involved in the Danforth Community in many ways, especially in supporting community initiatives. All in all - one of the best & friendliest places around!

We enjoyed a wonderful meal in Serena's section. I really, really like her because she's the best server there. She is friendly but not over-friendly and she is usually pretty fast.

A solid family restaurant with a big menu

We went there on some recent buzz about the Cafe having burgers "the size of your face". While the burgers were average in size, they were well received, as was the moussaka. 11:30am on a Sunday, you'll find a nice mixed crowd - families, younger people, seniors - everyone likes the price and the food. We'll be going back.

We enjoyed everything! I don't know why they describe it as a cafe, when really it's more of a casual dining type restaurant and bar. Great srvice and great food. Definitely going back.

We have dined there plenty of times, and we find the service to be cosistent.Also the new owners have cleaned the place up and did some nice interior and exterior work, so it looks alot better now. Keep up the good work New yorker, you defintely have a good thing going.
