More Than Laundry and Linen

Upon entering the bright, airy interior of Fresh Laundry Co. in Calgary's Inglewood district, it doesn't take long to discover that the store carries a lot more than laundry-related goods. Besides a sexy selection of upscale laundry detergents and linen waters, this designer apothecary stocks a wide variety of body lotions and cleansers, candles, all-purpose cleaners, skincare soaps, oils and creams and grooming items for men line the shelves.

Ian Davies, who owns Fresh Laundry with his sister and business partner, Lisa Davies, says they selected the cryptic name deliberately. “We decided upon Fresh Laundry to create some mystique and make it more interesting and ambiguous. People have to question what we’re about and have to come in to find out,” he explains.

Ian says Fresh Laundry carries about 20 brands from around the world  including products from Australia, Canada, France, Sweden and the United States. “We always make sure companies have a really great product and really great branding. They have to a have a fresh, clean look, but also look contemporary and modern,” says Ian of the criteria he uses to select products the store will carry.

A Fresh Feel

Besides operating Fresh Laundry Co., both Ian and Lisa Davies work as graphic designers and own another retail store – also in Inglewood – called The Uncommons. (Fresh Laundry opened in 2015, while The Uncommons was founded in 2012.)

“We always wanted to see certain products in Calgary, but they were never around, so we thought, why not open a store that has products that have a really interesting design elements, which look cool, but also have a good story?” Ian explains. He adds that Fresh Laundry Co. was born out of the siblings' other retail venture. “We had been looking at all these beautiful apothecary brands that didn’t fit in with The Uncommons, so we came up with this store,” Ian says.

The Davies siblings put their design background to use when creating the Fresh Laundry space and worked with their friend Jennifer Bassett of 2X2, a local design firm. The shop has a fresh, open, clean feel with a feature wall that's covered in moss. “We want to create a really unique experience for customers and have a nice, welcoming environment for them,” Davies explains.

Only at Fresh Laundry

When it comes to the products Fresh Laundry Co. carries, Ian says the duo endeavours to offer a unique assortment not available in other Calgary stores. One of the shop's recent inventory introductions is the entire Aesop line – a cult body and skincare brand from Australia with a devoted following. “A lot of people know the brand and are die-hard consumers. It’s exciting to bring it to Calgary, as we’re the first place to have the entire line,” says Ian.

And contrary to what some may think, Fresh Laundry Co. isn’t just for women. In fact, it offers a wide range of grooming products for men including beard oils, shaving lotions and charcoal soaps.

True to its name, Fresh Laundry Co. does, in fact, offer laundry and cleaning supplies by a Brooklyn company called Common Good that are suitable for those with skin sensitivities. Moreover, they are an eco-friendly option, as bottles can be refilled.
