4 tips for choosing the right golf shoes

3 novembre 2015

One of the most important pieces of equipment for golfers to get right is their shoes. There are some simple tips to follow in order to select the right golf shoes.

4 tips for choosing the right golf shoes

1. Material

Golf shoes are made out of a range of materials, including natural leather and synthetic materials. Choose the material of golf shoes that is appropriate for the conditions you play in.

  • If you're a casual golfer who usually only plays in good weather, you'll have more of a range of choice for golf shoe material.
  • If you think you might be playing golf in the rain, such as during a championship game, you'll want to ensure that you get a waterproof shoe in order to keep your feet dry and comfortable while you play.
  • You should also consider breathability of the material, based on how much your feet sweat when you play and how much heat they typically generate.

2. Use

Some golfers walk the course and carry their clubs. Alternatively, some golfers only go to a course and ride around the cart.

  • If you're someone who walks the golf course, try getting a shoe that is rugged and will hold up to a lot of wear and tear.
  • You'll also want to get shoes that are extremely comfortable. For people that ride around the course in cart, you could choose a shoe that is better looking and less durable, because they won't undergo as much daily use.

3. Fit

It's important to choose golf shoes that fit you, since they need to support your feet while you swing, walk and play.

  • Make sure you go to the shoe store wearing the pair of socks you would when you play golf to ensure that you experience exactly how the shoes will fit when you're wearing your golf socks.
  • Also, stay in the store and walk around for 10 or 15 minutes to get a better feel for how they feel when you move.
  • Have a golf store staff member measure your feet to ensure you're picking the right size, and try going to the store at the end of the day, when your feet are the most swollen.

4. Style

Golf shoes come in a huge range of styles.

  • Some golf shoes are traditional and look like Oxfords. These shoes are made of leather and would fit in well at a conservative or traditional golf club.
  • Many companies are making golf shoes now that look like athletic shoes. These are good for someone who prefers a more casual and sporty look.
  • Be sure to choose a golf shoe look that fits your aesthetic and fits in with the environment of the places that you choose to play.
